The SBRHS English Department took on a new approach to the summer required reading assignment for all students. They wrote a grant to the SBEF (Somerset Berkley Education Foundation) and were awarded monies to buy books for all students, Grades 9-11 and for the incoming Grade 8 students. Attached, you will find a link to the catalogue of the entire 45 titles in their "Summer Reading Library" from which our Grade 8 students can choose from. Our students need to choose a book from this list. SBRHS will be sending us copies of 7 of the titles from the 45 titles listed that our students can choose from for free. If they choose one of these 7 books to read, then the book is free and theirs to keep. If they would prefer another title from the complete catalogue then it would be up to them to purchase/obtain the book to read. This entire catalogue has been sent to the Berkley Public Library, so perhaps they will be able to get copies of some of the titles.
Every Grade 8 student is expected to read one of these titles over the summer. They will need to make this choice prior to us leaving for DC and must let Mrs. Valerie Ryan, their ELA teacher, know what title they chose, and she will send the list of students' names with their book choices to the high school. In the fall, they will create small book groups based on the titles chosen, so they cannot change their minds once students have chosen a title. The catalogue contains book descriptions with content warnings, where applicable. We strongly encourage you to review this with your child before they decide.
We appreciate the high school collaborating with both middle schools to bring this opportunity to our students. Please let us know if you have any questions.
Students attending Bristol Plymouth, Bristol Aggie or other high schools in the fall should be sure to check their school's website for any summer academic expectations and for information about fall athletics and other extracurricular opportunities.
